Ajanta and Ellora are famous for the cave temples discovered by a British Army Officer, John Smith in 1819. The caves were designed for Buddhist Monks who preached for Buddhist religion. These caves are located about 30 kms away from Aurangabad. These are 34 in number. The specialty of these caves is that they are carved in the hill only. These caves depict the three religions, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Out of 34 caves, 17 are dedicated to Hinduism, 12 to Buddhist and remaining 5 to Jainism.
